Drug Checking with FTIR Technology

At CTHRA, we use a laboratory grade Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer to analyze drug samples.

This technology uses infrared light to identify the chemical components of a substance. Every substance absorbs light differently, creating a unique pattern similar to a fingerprint. The FTIR compares that pattern to a scientific reference library to determine what is present in the sample.

This allows us to identify many substances currently circulating in the drug supply, including fentanyl, xylazine, cutting agents, and other emerging additives.

Why Drug Checking Is Critical

The drug supply is unpredictable and constantly changing. Substances are frequently sold as something they are not. Potency also varies and new compounds appear without warning.

Visual inspection cannot determine what is inside.
